Occupational Therapy

It is a rehabilitation therapy that incorporates ‘real life’ activities to help develop areas in children suffering from disabilities that may prevent them from handling everyday tasks. The goal is to help your child achieve independence in functioning on a day to day basis in all facets of their lives, whether it be bathing, dressing, home chores or recreational activities. Occupational Therapy utilizes productive and creative activity in treating physically and emotionally disabled children. Through use of customized treatment programs, comprehensive home/therapy center site evaluations and then adapting environments for your child through recommendations that help your child function at his or her best.

Your child’s main purpose in life at the moment is to play and learn. An Occupational Therapist can evaluate your child’s skills for play activities, school performance, abilities in everyday living skills and compare them to what is developmental age appropriate for their group to make sure they are reaching their potential. Through engaging and evaluating a child’s psychological, social and environmental functions a therapist can determine the well being of your child and play a vital role in their healthy development.

An Occupational Therapist can:

  • Help your child with severe developmental delays accomplish basic tasks such as bathing, getting dressed, brushing their teeth and feeding themselves.
  • Help your child with behavioral disorders, learn anger management to not hit or act out but channel that energy and anger into more positive ways such as writing about their feelings or participating in physical activities.
  • Teach your child with physical disabilities the skills necessary to coordination. Learning to use a computer or increase the legibility of their handwriting.
  • Evaluate your child’s need for special equipment, i.e. wheelchairs, bathing seats or splints.
