Special Education

The goal of special education is to instruct students with physical, mental or development problems with special needs, in a modified instructional environment that specializes and recognizes the learning differences these children may have developed. They are usually comprised of small self contained classrooms so that your child has the benefit of the hands on one on one relationship he or she may require to learn. They involve techniques, exercises and subject matter designed for students whose learning needs cannot be met by standard school curriculum. Special classes and programs designed and targeted to help your child reach their learning potential.

Early identification is important because it can dramatically increase your child’s chances for success in school.

Be aware that it may take till your child is of school age, usually 6 years old, to be diagnosed properly because they are finally in a formal learning environment, but learning disabilities are not formally diagnosed until a child is in a school setting for at least two years so that their overall progress is monitored and evaluated in mainstream classrooms.

Some potential risks that may have caused a child to develop a learning disability and make them a candidate for Special Education are as follows:

  • Family history of learning disabilities;
  • Injuries and long-term illnesses affecting neurological development;
  • Parental substance abuse;
  • Poor prenatal medical care and nutrition;
  • Prenatal injury or delivery complications;
  • Exposure to environmental toxins such as lead or toxic mold;
  • Poverty, abuse and neglect.
