Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA)
What is ABA?
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a therapy based on the science of learning and behavior. The goal is to increase behaviors that are helpful and decrease behaviors that are harmful. The methods of behavior analysis have been used and studied for decades. Therapists have used ABA to help children with autism and related developmental disorders since the 1960s.
Applied Behavior Analysis involves many techniques for understanding and changing behavior. ABA is a flexible treatment:
- Can be adapted to meet the needs of each unique person
- Provided in many different locations – at home, at school, and in the community
- Teaches skills that are useful in everyday life
- Can involve one-to-one teaching or group instruction
Does ABA work?
Today ABA is widely recognized as a safe and effective treatment for ASD. ABA has passed scientific tests of its usefulness, quality, and effectiveness. It has been endorsed by a number of state and federal agencies, including the U.S. Surgeon General and the New York State Department of Health. Over the last decade, the nation has seen a particularly dramatic increase in the use of ABA to help persons with autism live happy and productive lives. In particular, ABA principles and techniques can foster basic skills such as looking, listening and imitating, as well as complex skills such as reading, conversing and understanding another person’s perspective.
